Research Commons, McGill Library (McLennan-Redpath Library Complex, 3459 McTavish Street)
In association with the GREN and as part of the « Digital Humanities: Virtual Seminar » organized by the CRIHN (and the McGill DH center), the Thinc Lab (Guelph), and The Humanities Data Lab (Ottawa), Laura Mandell will present a talk entitled « BigDIVA: Nourishing and Sustaining a Scholarly Infrastructure Built from the Ground Up ».
BigDIVA (Big Data Infrastructure Visualization Application) is a web-based search and discovery service designed for humanities scholars and students. The BigDIVA web service (bigdiva.org) is fed by the ARC Catalog, a resource developed by scholars for scholars. The materials catalogued by the service have been curated by scholarly communities working in specific fields. These communities peer-review open access materials and select proprietary resources. Using BigDIVA allows scholars to search and discover both kinds of materials at the same time. In this talk, I describe BigDIVA, ARC (the Advanced Research Consortium), and the ARC Catalog that feeds BigDIVA. By subscribing, libraries are investing in a tool that legitimizes open-access publishing and crosses proprietary and open-access boundaries, situating open educational learning resources and scholarship within a search tool that accesses the most relevant resources of all kinds. Beyond this, libraries will also be supporting the Advanced Research Consortium (ARC), an organization that fosters the creation and dissemination of open-access, peer-reviewed digital research projects
This talk will take place at the Research Commons of the McGill Library and will be streamed live.
